Chimneys are typically vertical, or as near as possible to vertical, to ensure that the gases flow smoothly, drawing air into the combustion  in what is known as the stack or chimney, effect.     The operating theatre ceiling is the most important part of a hospital ventilation system. Also called UCVS (Ultra Clean Ventilation System), these sophisticated systems are actually a combination of a variety of elements, including gas tight welded pressure chambers, air filter housings or filter grids, HEPA filters, priming illumination and air diffusers. An operating theatre is provided with preconditioned air by a central air handling unit (AHU). Nowadays, most hospital ventilation systems operate with a mixture of fresh and recirculation air. For operating theatres or minor surgery rooms to be upgraded or renovated, recirculation modules are an excellent alternative. Because many older facilities have insufficient space for bigger AHU’s and ducts etc, the recirculation module can be installed in either the ceiling (Optivent) or the wall (Optiwall). Here, the recirculation module will supply the recirculation air and the existing or new AHU will supply the fresh air portion

    A laminar flow cabinet or laminar flow closet or tissue culture hood is a carefully enclosed bench designed to prevent contamination of semiconductor wafers, biological samples, or any particle sensitive materials. Air is drawn through a HEPA filter and blown in a very smooth, laminar air flow towards the user. The cabinet is usually made of stainless steel with no gaps or joints where spores might collect. Such hoods exist in both horizontal and vertical configurations, and there are many different types of cabinets with a variety of airflow patterns and acceptable uses. Laminar flow cabinets may have a UV-C germicidal lamp to sterilize the interior and contents when not in use. (It is important to switch this light off during use, to limit exposure to skin and eyes as stray ultraviolet light emissions can cause cancer and cataracts)

    A dust collection system is an air quality improvement system used in industrial, commercial, and home production shops to improve breathable air quality and safety by removing particulate matter from the air and environment. Dust collection systems work on the basic formula of capture, convey and collect. First, the dust must be captured. This is accomplished with devices such as capture hoods to catch dust at its source of origin. Many times, the machine producing the dust will have a port to which a duct can be directly attached. In cyclone separators, the material, which is permeated by air as a carrier, is set into rotational motion by its own flow speed and appropriate design of the separator. The centrifugal forces acting on the particles accelerate them radially outwards. At the outer wall, the particles in the air stream lose their kinetic energy due to friction and drop down into the collecting area. The cleaned air stream is discharged centrally upwards by means of an immersion pipe.
